Juneteenth Commemoration

  • Saint Luke Lutheran Church 203 North Valley Forge Road Devon, PA (map)

Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, but slavery continued in Texas and Louisiana for more than two years because the word had not yet reached there. Texas and Louisiana finally got the good news on June 19, 1865. Former slaves broke out in spontaneous celebration.
Saint Luke will mark "Juneteenth" in song and word during worship.
