Acolyte by definition is an assistant or attendant. They assist with the service by lighting candles, collecting the offering plates from the ushers (but that's not happening right now), assisting the pastor if they need something, and closing the service by extinguishing the candles. It's an introduction to the structure of the service and a great way for 7-12 graders to learn the liturgy. Most acolytes serve 3-4 times per year.  After worship, those interested are invited to meet in the sanctuary for a brief 30 minute training and then rejoin the Confirmation class.
